In a bid to boost city infrastructure, the Delhi government has approved a 6-km elevated road project worth ₹500 crore, stated a Public Works Department statement on Friday.

The government has also decided to construct a road corridor on both sides of the Sahibi river and transfer four key stretches to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for expansion and maintenance, added the statement.

Trans-Yamuna to benefit

The elevated road will connect Sonia Vihar on Pushta Road in north-east Delhi to Tronica City in Ghaziabad. It is aimed at easing traffic bottlenecks in the trans-Yamuna area.

The projects were approved at a meeting chaired by PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh.

The Minister said, “My colleague Kapil Mishra [Delhi Law Minister and Karawal Nagar MLA] had been pressing for a new road to decongest the area. However, owing to the large number of trees in the area, we decided to build an elevated road to provide relief to the people of Sonia Vihar.”

Mr. Singh added that the corridor, which will connect Dhansa in south-west Delhi to Basai Darapur in west Delhi, will also help ease traffic congestion.

“It was also decided in the meeting that the existing police station near the Dhaula Kuan metro station will be relocated to create a slip road from National Highway-48 towards Naraina,” said the PWD Minister.

Mr. Singh added that this would help improve the flow of traffic from the city towards the IGI Airport and Delhi Cantonment areas.

The four key road stretches that the government has decided to hand over to the NHAI are a 13.2-km stretch from Peeragarhi to the Tikri border, a 6.8-km stretch from Peeragarhi to Zakhira, a 7.5-km stretch from Ali village to Ring Road at Ashram, and an 8-km stretch of NH-148A, read the PWD statement.

New pipeline

Meanwhile, officials at the Delhi Jal Board said they are working on a plan to lay an 11-km pipeline to address the disruptions in water supply caused by the rise in ammonia levels in the Yamuna river.

Work on the project, estimated to cost ₹300 crore, is under way. The proposed pipeline will stretch from the Haiderpur water treatment plant in Rohini to the Wazirabad barrage.
