Koraput: The Raygada administration on Monday disengaged a cook and an attendant and suspended assistant manager Rashmita Sahu of a govt-run hostel in Gunupur after a purported video showing a brutal attack on students by fellow boarders went viral.
The district welfare department has also lodged a complaint with Gunupur police station against nine students involved in the incident. The students responsible for the ruckus have been suspended from the hostel for one month.
Additional district magistrate (Rayagada) Nihar Ranjan Kanwar stated that further investigation is on to determine the motive behind the attack. “We are also planning to engage counsellors to guide the students and prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future,” he added.
A video of the incident, which occurred on March 4, surfaced online on Saturday showing two Class VIII students and a Class IX student being severely beaten by at least nine others. The hostel run by the tribal welfare department has 100 boarders.
Parents of the injured students, demanding strict action, submitted a petition to the administration on Monday seeking the expulsion of the unruly boarders and dismissal of the staff responsible for negligence.
“We demand stringent action against the unruly students and the installation of CCTV cameras in the hostel. The students are living in dangerous conditions. If our demands are not met, we will stage a massive protest against the administration,” said Sudhir Gamang, one of the parents.
