The Radha Nagar subway project constructed across the railway tracks near Chromepet railway station is set to be completed.
The Southern Railway agreed to part with a portion of the space to the State Highways department located near the platform to create access facilities for vehicles reaching GST Road. The Radha Nagar subway runs parallel to the Rajendra Prasad Road of Hasthinapuram, and links residents across several streets in Chromepet.
The Southern Railway agreed to part with a portion of the land after Pallavaram MLA E. Karunanidhi met the Chennai Divisional Railway Manager Shailendra Singh to help speed up the subway project.
Social activist Santhanam said the subway constructed to replace the level crossing gate no: 27 near Chromepet railway station has been delayed for several years due to land acquisition. However, with the intervention of the Pallavaram MLA the project, once completed, would help in preventing vehicles taking a detour via R.P. Road to reach the GST Road or wait at the level crossing.
A senior official of the Chennai division of Southern Railway confirmed that a portion of land near the platform has been allotted for the subway to create access facilities.
At present, the subway is waiting for space for the access road to the GST Road. As part of this, the bus stand located outside the railway station is proposed to be shifted and some traffic arrangements planned for easing traffic once the subway is opened.
Sources in the Highways Department said that the sump room for the well was under construction. Tenders have been floated for purchase of pump and genset. “We are waiting for a few dry days to lay the BT layer on the approach roads and do the painting. We are expecting the work to be completed in about a month,” a source explained.
S. Rangaraj, a resident of Chromepet, said the subway which was initiated in 2010 has remained incomplete for more than a decade and the subway set to be commissioned is good news for motorists.
