In a bid to improve monsoon preparedness, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council on Monday (September 29, 2025) passed a resolution to hire professional manpower to operate sump and pump arrangements at 83 flood-prone areas in the city.
The civic body will hire 27 electricians and 30 electrical helpers for operating the sump and pump arrangements at 10 flood-prone locations in Tiruvottiyur and Madhavaram for a period of 120 days on a contract basis. As many as 36 electricians and 36 electrical helpers will be hired for 12 flood-prone areas in Manali.
In Tondiarpet, 16 flood-prone areas will get 21 electricians and 39 electrical helpers to operate sump and pump arrangements, while Royapuram will get 21 electricians and 27 helpers to mitigate flooding in nine areas.
A total of 11 flood-prone areas in Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar will get 27 electricians and 33 electrical helpers to operate the facility.
Even though many areas in the zones of Ambattur, Anna Nagar, and Kodambakkam face flooding risk, the civic body has installed sump and pump arrangements at only 10 locations in these zones. They will only get 24 electricians and 30 electrical helpers.
In Valasaravakkam and Adyar, nine locations will get the flood-mitigation arrangements with 18 electricians and 27 helpers to operate the facilities during the floods.
As many as six locations in Perungudi will get sump and pump facilities, with 15 electricians and 18 electrical helpers operating them during the northeast monsoon.
