The Mangaluru chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), in association with Art Kanara Trust, will organise an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Karnataka Lalithakala Academy award-winning artists.

Titled ‘Contemplations and Dialogue’, the exhibition will be held from May 5 to 14 at the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture, G. G. Road, Ballalbagh. The exhibition features works by three Mangaluru-based artists – Veena Srinivas, Syed Asif Ali and Rajendra Kedige – who were recently honoured by the academy for their significant contributions to the field of visual art.

Ms. Srinivas presents her contemporary interpretation of the traditional art form Kavi Kale. Mr. Ali showcases a series of water colour landscapes while Mr. Kedige exhibits abstract compositions rooted in geometric forms.

An exclusive preview of the exhibition will take place on May 4 at 5.30 p.m. in the presence of artist and film-maker Madhusudan Kumar.

The exhibition will be open to the public daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., till May 14.

After watching Matthias Schweighöfer’s Army of Thieves and obsessively listening to Wagner’s Ring cycle operas (Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse also contributed to a fascination with the German composer), The Four Seasonshas prompted a passion for Vivaldi’s violin concerti celebrating spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Based on the eponymous 1981 movie, The Four Seasons, which Tina Fey adapted with Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, while not laugh-out-loud funny all the time, has enough going for it to elicit warm smiles as we recognise ourselves or friends in the couples on screen.

Three couples — Kate (Fey) and Jack (Will Forte), Claude (Marco Calvani) and Danny (Colman Domingo), and Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver) and Nick (Steve Carell) — go on vacation four times a year. In spring, they go to Nick and Anne’s lakeside cottage to celebrate the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, only to learn to their horror that while Anne has planned a surprise party to renew their vows, Nick wants to end the marriage as he is not happy with Anne anymore.“We are like co-workers in a nuclear facility,” Nick explains to Danny.

Once Nick and Anne have separated, Nick brings his much younger girlfriend, Ginny (Erika Henningsen), to the vacations, upsetting the group dynamic. The others are not willing to give Ginny a chance, out of a sense of loyalty to Anne. Ginny also does not do herself many favours, choosing a decidedly uncomfortable “eco-friendly” resort for the group’s summer vacation.

Ginny acts much younger than her 32 years, more like she and her friends are 20-something flower children, but never mind. Awkwardness abounds during autumn break when both Anne and Ginny land up for a family weekend at Anne and Nick’s daughter Lila’s (Julia Lester) school. Kate and Jack’s daughter, Beth (Ashlyn Maddox), also goes there. Things take a turn for the worse during Lila’s play which reveals exactly what she thinks of Ginny and her father.

Winter sees Nick celebrating New Year’s Eve with Ginny’s friends, who are mostly sober and vegan, while Anne joins the group with Terry (Toby Huss), whom she is dating.

Through the seasonal vacations, the friends and couples get into fights, apologise and are there for each other. Even the fact that the jokes do not come thick and fast is reassuring, as not everyone can be “on” all the time and makes Danny telling Kate “why is your face so loud” that much more funny.

The funeral, the stripper-shoe-shaped urn, the sea urchin bite, the heart surgery and The Burning Man sand goggles all come together for eight half-hour episodes of frothy fun. These are people one can happily spend time together, giggling and tearing up in equal measure.

And there is Vivaldi and Vampire Weekend, or Terry’s truly dreadful rendition of ‘Candle in the Wind’ and the friends’ reaction, to sweeten the deal.

The Four Seasons is currently streaming on Netflix

‘Retro’ box office collection: Suriya’s film crosses ₹100-crore mark in less than a week of release

Retro, Tamil superstar Suriya’s latest release, crossed the Rs. 100-crore mark at the worldwide box office on Tuesday, the film’s production banner has officially announced. The film, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has earned Rs. 104 crores worldwide, a feat it attained in less than a week since its release on May 1.

2D Entertainment, the banner backing the film, announced the news on their official X handle.

According to the trade tracking website Sacnilk, Retro earned Rs. 48.90 crores in India as of Tuesday.

Retro features Suriya as Paarivel Kannan, a reformed gangster who goes after his ladylove to the Andaman Islands. At the same time, his notorious past catches up in the form of his gangster father. The film, a mix of multiple genres, has garnered polarising reviews from the critics and the audiences.

While many have criticised the film, calling out its overstuffed narrative and an underwhelming second half, several others have praised Karthik’s off-beat attempt. The Hindu’s review of Retroread, “If not for that underwhelming middle stretch, Retro proves to be the kind of experiment more Tamil filmmakers need to take on.”

The film, bankrolled by Jyotika and Suriya under the banner 2D Entertainment, stars Pooja Hegde as the female lead. Joju George, Jayaram, and Nasser play pivotal roles. Karthik’s regular collaborator, Santhosh Narayanan, has scored the music for the movie. Shafique Mohamed Ali has served as the editor, while Shreyaas Krishna was the cinematographer. Retro is co-produced by Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian, Karthikeyan Santhanam under the banner Stone Bench Films.

Meanwhile, Suriya is currently working on his upcoming film with RJ Balaji, tentatively called Suriya 45. The star also has the recently-announced film with Venkt Atluri and Vetri Maaran’s Vaadivaasal in the line-up.

New Delhi: The entire nation is united in applauding Operation Sindoor, under which Indian armed forces carried out airstrikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Over 100 terrorists were killed in the attack. Many opposition leaders have praised the armed forces for conducting such a strong action against Pakistani terrorists.

Shashi Tharoor, Congress Lok Sabha member for Thiruvananthapuram, applauded the government and armed forces. In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Shashi Tharoor said, “So proud of my country today. Jai Hind!”

He, in a different post, said, “A set of calibrated, calculated, precise strikes against terror targets. Exactly what I had advocated last week: hit hard, hit smart. I applaud the government and stand solidly with our armed forces.”

He further added, “At the same time, we have behaved in a manner that would not justify further expansion of the conflict. We have made our point and acted in self-defence. Time for all concerned to act wisely to prevent uncontrolled escalation.”

Earlier this morning, Mallikarjun Kharge, President, Indian National Congress and leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, also praised the Indian armed forces. He said, “We are extremely proud of our Indian Armed Forces, who have struck terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. We applaud their resolute resolve and courage.”
