Kamal Haasan sees a massive success in Japan as Vikram registers highest opening figures in Japan after Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer
Amidst the political and regional tension surrounding the release of Thug Life, Kamal Haasan breathed a sigh of relief as his 2022 film, Vikram, has recently made a name for itself in Japanese theaters. According to reports, the Kamal Haasan film, which released in Japan on May 30, currently boasts a total collection of Rs 50 lakhs. It is poised to surpass the Rs 70 lakhs mark, a huge milestone as the film is on its way to register the highest opening figures for a foreign film in Japan – a distinction previously ascribed to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Vikram also features South Indian superstars like Vijay Sethupathi, Arjun Das, and Fahadh Faasil, and reportedly minted more than Rs 200 crore at the global box office after its initial release.
The film Vikram revolves around an ex-military officer and a leader of covert operations, and his attempt to destroy a criminal syndicate with his group of vigilante friends. Fans say that this film has continued the legacy of Indian films, especially South Indian ones, which often do unexpectedly well in Japan. Films like Rajinikanth’s Muthu, S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR, and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion have also enjoyed commercial success in the Asian nation.
Kamal Haasan has recently found himself embroiled in controversy and has faced a lot of heat from his fans, particularly in Karnataka. This stems from a controversial remark the veteran actor made while promoting his and Mani Ratnam’s film Thug Life, due to which the film’s release has been put on hold in Karnataka, causing a huge loss to both Kamal Haasan and the film’s producers. The producer of the film while talking to the Hindu, revealed that the Mani Ratnam directed film if not released in Karnataka will see a huge loss of about Rs 35 to Rs 40 crore gross at the box office.
