New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested an African national for allegedly defrauding multiple women by posing as a Korean jewellery businessman settled in the UK. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Stephane, alias K Cee Dominic, was nabbed in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar. The case surfaced when a Shahdara resident filed a complaint stating she was duped of Rs 48,500 by an individual she met on a language learning app, HelloTalk. Using the profile name ‘Duck Young’, the scammer reportedly established a rapport with her. She said that one day the man claimed he has been detained at Mumbai airport for travelling without medical documents. Then she received calls from two individuals impersonating immigration officers, demanding money for his release.Acting on their instructions, the woman reportedly transferred the amount via UPI. When further demands of Rs 2 lakh were made, she refused, and the accused cut off all communication. An FIR was registered on Sept 24. DCP (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said, “Using bank details, social media records, call detail records and IP data, the accused was identified to be the mastermind of the scam.” Police seized Stephane’s mobile phone, which revealed he used the same profile to chat with over 100 women across India. Stephane initially travelled to Ivory Coast after failing to obtain an Indian visa as a Nigerian citizen. He later entered India on a six-month tourist visa in 2019 and since then moved around west Delhi, staying in the country illegally, said police.
