At Least 7 Dead As Record Rain Floods Kolkata; Schools Closed, Metro & Train Services Hit

Heavy overnight rains have severely impacted Kolkata and its surrounding areas, causing widespread flooding and electrocution deaths. Seven people died across multiple localities, including Beniapukur, Behala, and Ballygunge, as waterlogged streets and submerged electric wires posed serious risks. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation reported extreme rainfall, with Garia Kamdahari recording 332 mm, followed by Jodhpur Park at 285 mm and Kalighat at 280 mm. Metro Railway services on the Blue Line were disrupted due to waterlogging between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations. Eastern Railway officials confirmed delays in train operations, especially towards the South Section. Schools were closed as streets flooded up to knee level, while office workers faced transport breakdowns and traffic jams. Power and internet outages hit several neighborhoods, and Durga Puja pandals suffered water damage. The India Meteorological Department warned that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is moving northwest, bringing more rain. Another low-pressure system is forecast to form around September 25, potentially causing further rainfall.
