Power outage major issue during heavy downpour across Mumbai Metropolitan Region | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: Relentless rainfall for the past two days has severely impacted the power distribution system in Kalyan, Vasai, and Virar areas. As a result, power supply to 2.5 lakh electricity consumers in these areas has been shut down as a precautionary measure.In Mumbai, power outages were witnessed amid the heavy rainfall on Tuesday, especially in the suburbs. Kurla, for one, was majorly impacted with two substations of Adani Electricity shut down and affecting 1000 families. Other areas facing power cuts were parts of Andheri, Jogeshwari, Kandivli, Ghatkopar, Vile Parle and Mira Road among other places. BEST had witnessed power cuts in parts of Sion and Mahalaxmi a day earlier.An official from Adani Electricity said, “The rains are in full force and in some spots, water levels have crossed the safe mark. When this happens, our sensors alert us and SCADA (computerised) system steps in to switch off supply. We are receiving high call volumes today as heavy rains have led to supply interruptions in some pockets.” He said, “As a precautionary safety measure, we had to disconnect nearly 70 substations, impacting around 25,000 families. This is a small fraction of our 9,000+ substations serving 32 lakh consumers.”A Tata Power official said, “Amid waterlogging and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, the company’s frontline employees have been working tirelessly to maintain power infrastructure and swiftly address any disruptions.”An MSEDCL official said, “Efforts are being undertaken on a war footing by the power distribution company to restore the disrupted power supply. Areas affected include Nandivali, Adivali, Titwala, and Badlapur. The heaviest impact of the torrential rain has been on the power system in Vasai-Virar. In Vasai-Virar, 1,300 transformers have been shut down due to flood water.”BEST officials were unavailable for comment.
