‘He’s safe, likely to return soon’: Pregnant wife of BSF jawan in Pakistan custody returns to Kolkata after assurance | Kolkata News – The Times of India

RISHRA: Rajani Shaw, wife of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who is currently detained in Pakistan, travelled from her home in Rishra to Pathankot on Monday seeking clarity on her husband’s condition and efforts for his return.
She later flew back to Kolkata from Amritsar after BSF officers assured her that staying on the ground would not serve any additional purpose and that the force was doing everything possible to secure Purnam’s early release.
Purnam was detained by Pakistan Rangers last Wednesday after he inadvertently crossed the border.
Before boarding an IndiGo flight to Kolkata from Amritsar, Rajani told TOI that she was satisfied with her meeting with the commanding officer in Firozpur.

Do you believe that Purnam Kumar Shaw will be released soon?
“The officer told me that talks with Pakistan Rangers was underway and a resolution appeared to be on the horizon,” she said, adding that she had been assured her husband was safe and likely to return soon.
The BSF arranged for Rajani’s travel from Firozpur to Amritsar, along with her son, sisters, and brother-in-law. She had initially travelled to Pathankot and then to Firozpur in search of answers about her husband’s repatriation.
On Wednesday, BSF officials had indicated to her that some positive news could emerge in the next couple of days, hinting that Purnam might soon be handed over by the Pakistan Rangers. A day earlier, Rajani had been distressed after learning that a scheduled flag meeting between the two countries’ security forces had been cancelled.

E-witness room for cops to depose remotely | Chennai News – The Times of India

Chennai: With a view to expedite judicial processes and reduce logistical burden on police officers, the Chennai police have opened a Virtual Witness Room at the office of the joint commissioner of police (East) in Egmore. The facility, equipped with HD video-conferencing, will enable investigating officers to provide court depositions remotely.
Vijayendra Bidari, additional commissioner of police, headquarters launched the facility. It has been conceived in accordance with Section 254(1)-(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which permits govt officers, particularly police personnel, to give witness testimony through electronic means. Madras high court has already mandated that courts across Tamil Nadu accept depositions from officially designated virtual witness rooms.
The facility features soundproof interiors , audio-video recording systems, a document visualiser for presenting evidence, and secure video conferencing tools. It aims to eliminate the need for officers to travel to distant courts, preventing disruptions to investigations.
An assistant commissioner of police explained, “Officers may have to travel a day in advance and even stay in lodges if court hearings are adjourned or the magistrate is unavailable.”
The move will ensure court timelines are met with minimal disruption to police duties. The model will be replicated across other districts in TN.

HC notices to govt over unbridled constructions in GO 111 zone – The Times of India

Hyderabad: Expressing serious concerns over unbridled urbanisation around Hyderabad’s crucial water bodies, Telangana high court Wednesday sought an explanation from senior officials within four weeks on how large-scale constructions—particularly convention halls—were being allowed within the eco-sensitive catchment areas of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, despite explicit prohibitory orders under GO 111.
The court issued notices to the state govt, irrigation and municipal administration departments and Pollution Control Board. A bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara, also issued notices to the owners of five such convention centres, seeking their responses to the allegations made against their structures.
GO 111 prohibits any concrete construction activity within a 10-kilometre radius of the twin reservoirs, an area officially notified as a bio-conservation zone to protect the water bodies and surrounding environment.
The bench was hearing a PIL filed by Mandadi Madhava Reddy from Moinabad mandal in Rangareddy district. The petitioner questioned the inaction of the state machinery in preventing the emergence of large-scale constructions within the prohibited zone, arguing that such developments violate the provisions of GO 111 and pose a significant threat to the environment.
Petitioner’s counsel, P Sasidhar Reddy, submitted to the court that five large convention centres had already come up in Janwada within Moinabad mandal, along with several others, in areas falling under GO 111 restrictions.
He pointed out that each convention hall can accommodate up to 5,000 people, generating vast amounts of waste and sewage, which ultimately find their way into the twin lakes. The influx of large crowds and vehicular traffic, he argued, would increase air and water pollution and worsen traffic congestion in the area.
The counsel further highlighted that these structures, along with their massive compound walls, have replaced significant green cover with concrete, disrupting the natural flow of water and contributing to ecological degradation.
He also criticised the govt for its alleged failure in enforcing environmental norms, claiming that even HYDRAA, the specialised agency created to protect the lakes, has been unable to curb the construction activity within the bio-conservation zone.

Pahalgam attack delays BJP’s top-level reshuffle, Vijayendra left waiting | Bengaluru News – The Times of India

Bengaluru: The terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, has disrupted BJP’s timeline to appoint a new national president, casting uncertainty over key organisational appointments — including the top position in the Karnataka unit. BY Vijayendra, incumbent state president, remains in a state of limbo even as his supporters are hopeful that he would continue in the post.
BJP’s constitution mandates a tiered electoral process, beginning with the appointment of district presidents, followed by state unit heads, and culminating in the selection of a national president. Party bylaws require elections to be completed in at least half of its 37 organisational state units, before a national chief can be chosen.
Despite this structure, appointments to top posts are typically made via consensus by the party high command. Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and G Kishan Reddy are among those being considered to succeed JP Nadda, the outgoing president. The entire reshuffle process was expected to conclude by April 30.
Changes in brass in key states like Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh were also slated for completion by that deadline. However, the April 23 terror strike in Pahalgam has shifted the Centre’s focus to national security, temporarily halting party decisions.
“Yesterday (April 30) was the informal deadline to appoint a party president but the process has been delayed since circumstances have changed,” said Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, BJP national secretary and co-in charge of Karnataka. “However, with the country showing exemplary resilience in the aftermath of the terror attack, BJP will soon resume routine activities. Party brass is expected to take a call on a new president later this month.”
The party’s parliamentary board — its highest decision-making body — will take the final call on appointments. Senior functionaries said the high command now aims to complete the appointments of state and national president by May 11. Signalling a return to normal political activity, the BJP is also set to resume its Janaakrosha Yatre from May 7. The state-wide campaign, which targets the Congress govt over price rise, was suspended after the terror attack.
Vijayendra, first-time MLA from Shikaripura and son of former chief minister BS Yediyurappa, was appointed state president in Dec 2023. With no major internal resistance and since he is still early in his term, party insiders say the high command is inclined to retain him.
“There was an issue of indiscipline, but the high command took care of it by expelling MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal. Now, ratifying Vijayendra as president is only a formality which we hope will be completed soon,” said P Rajiv, BJP state general secretary.
With his main critic Yatnal, expelled for indiscipline, the atmosphere within the party has shifted in Vijayendra’s favour, paving the way for further organisational restructuring and the appointment of new office bearers.
