How Shaji N Karun captured the realities of life through his lens


A pall of gloom hangs over ‘Piravi’, Shaji N Karun’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram. This was where the auteur and ace cinematographer met admirers from all walks of life. This is where he had conceptualised all his works, including documentaries and short films. This is where I met Shaji more than three decades ago as a student of journalism as part of my course. He had shared that it was his wife Anusuya Warrier’s idea to name their house ‘Piravi’.

Shaji spent considerable time speaking to a rookie reporter, discussing his maiden film Piravi (1988), his second film Swaham (1994) and his student days in Pune. Piravi , a huge success, was about the story of a father’s futile search for his son, who has been picked up by the police. The film brought alive the excesses during the Emergency, in a poignant way. It won Shaji the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 and the National award for best director along with several other honours from across the world. Swaham (1994) was also screened at Cannes.

It was Shaji’s fascination for the images painted by light that made him take to cinematography. After his graduating in Physics from University College, he chose to join the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. He passed out with a gold medal in cinematography.

Shaji always spoke passionately about the magic and moods of the tropical sun. He would excitedly capture its constantly changing hues and direction. His attention to detail was amazing.

His simplicity was in stark contrast to the world he saw through the lens. Since he lived in the neighbourhood of my mother’s house, I have often seen him walk quietly along the road. He was then the chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. He was also the executive chairman of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). He was able to get the best of filmmakers and technicians to these festivals because of his personal equation with them.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to speak to him several times. Each time, I was left with a sense of wonder at the filmmaker’s ability to delve into varied themes set in different periods of times. Shaji was not a prolific director. He took time to shape a story or a theme and then spent some more time visualising it in a language and idiom that was all his.

Among the many awards that Shaji had won, he particularly treasured the Sir Charlie Chaplin Award instituted to commemorate the birth centenary of the legendary comic actor (1989) at the Edinburgh Film Festival. “After I boarded my flight to India, the flight attendants announced that I had won this prestigious award and the passengers gave me a standing ovation,” he had recounted during an interview to The Hindu.

Shaji’s deep affinity for music and painting was evident in all his films. His bond with artist Namboothiri resulted in the documentary Neruvara on the latter’s life. Moving Focus – A Voyage captured the artist KG Subramanyam’s journey. The free-flowing lines and strokes were beautifully translated onto the screen by Shaji.

He had stepped into the world of cinema by cranking the camera for KP Kumaran’s Lakshmi Vijayam (1976). But it was his long association with G. Aravindan that marked his cinematographic oeuvre. Kanchana Sita (1977), Thampu (1978), Kummatty (1979), Esthappan (1979), Pokkuveyil (1981), Chidambaram, Oridathu and Unni were all filmed by him. He had an uncanny ability to understand what Aravindan had in mind. Shaji was able to transform Aravindan’s abstract ideas into perfectly composed frames. “Aravindan’s screenplay was often very brief. Thampu, for instance, had only four pages,” he had recalled during the screening of the film’s restored version in Cannes.

He had also worked with other great directors such as P. Padmarajan, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, K.G. George and Lenin Rajendran. He was the cinematographer of writer-director Padmarajan’s Koodevide, which marked actor Suhasini’s debut in Malayalam films.

Paying tribute to Shaji, Suhasini had shared on Instagram: “Remembering Shaji Karun. Some people we meet are evergreen and eternal. He was the cinematographer for my debut film Koodevide. I was his Subhadra in Vanaprastham. A true artiste and a great human. People like him made our industry safe and marvellous for newcomers. Will miss him…”

In Vanaprastham (1999), Shaji’s third feature film, Mohanlal came up with an award-winning performance as a poverty-stricken Kathakali performer and his inner struggle as an artiste and man.

Kutty Srank (2010) remains one of the most complex films of Shaji. It traced the past life of a dead Chavittunatakan artiste and the different memories he left behind in the places he had lived. Blurring reality and fiction, Shaji’s story in a sense was also the story of certain regions of the State and the arrival of different faiths and belief systems. Mammotty effortlessly played the three avatars of Kutty Srank and his relationship with three women.

Shaji had once said that Mohanlal’s large expressive eyes was his biggest advantage while Mammootty was so handsome that it was difficult to mask his good looks. “Even if one were to smear his face with soil, it would difficult to hide his features.”

After Swaapanam and Olu, Shaji’s heartfelt desire was to direct a musical. He had said how disappointed he was when a top actor, who had received several awards for his work in Shaji’s films, had come up with all kinds of excuses to not work in the musical. It was to have been a mega Indo-European project.

With Shaji’s passing, Malayalam cinema has lost a director and technician who elevated it to global standards. I recently watched Vanaprastham on television and experienced the meditative pace at which Shaji’s camera captured every nuance of emotion. It reflected Shaji’s approach to life — observing and enjoying every moment in quietude.

While performing at East Point College in Bengaluru, Sonu Nigam was interrupted by a student who “rudely” requested that he sing in Kannada. In response, the singer paused his performance to address the audience, reaffirming his respect for the language and the people of Karnataka. He also linked the student’s reaction to the recent Pahalgam attack, drawing attention to broader issues of sensitivity and unity.

In a now-viral video, Sonu Nigam is heard addressing the crowd following the incident. He said, “In my career, I have sung in multiple languages but the best songs that I have ever sung are in the Kannada language. Whenever I come to your city, I come with lots of love. We do a lot of shows in a lot of places, but whenever we have shows in Karnataka we come with a lot of respect for you. You have treated me like your family, but I didn’t like when the boy there, who is not even as old as my career, is rudely threatening me to sing in Kannada.”

The singer drew a parallel between the student’s “irrational” outburst and the recent Pahalgam incident, stating, “This is the reason behind the incident in Pahalgam. Please see who is standing before you. I love you guys.”

Expressing his affection for the state, the singer said, “I do so many shows across the world where thousands of people gather, and every time I hear even a single person shouting ‘Kannada’, I make sure to sing at least one line in Kannada for them. That’s how much I love and respect all of you. So please be kind.”

Sonu Nigam recently performed at Delhi Technological University. He began his career in 1992 with the song ‘Hum To Chhaila Ban Gaye’ from the TV serial Talash and soon made a mark in Bollywood as a playback singer, rising to fame with hits like ‘Sandese Aate Hai’ from Border and ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ from Pardes. Known for his versatility, Sonu has lent his voice to songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Odia, English, Assamese, Malayalam, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Tulu, Maithili, and Manipuri.

Anupamaa is keeping audiences glued to their show. The current track of Anupamaa is gaining a lot of attention. Raghav gets support from Anupamaa and she promises to prove him innocent. She reveals to the Kothari family that Pankhuri, the wife of Raghav is not dead. Moti Baa gets anxious and wants Gautam to close the case. Gautam gets Kinjal arrested and accuses her of stealing money from their locker. He in return demands Anupamaa to convince Raghav to drop the case. But, Anupamaa supports Raghav and wants Kinjal to get punished for her actions. Toshu slams Anupamaa and calls her selfish.

Meanwhile, Moti Baa brainwashes Rahi and makes her stand against Anupamaa. Rahi promises to never step into Anu Ki Rasoi and Anupamaa gets shattered by her decision. Anupamaa feels Rahi is going away from her. Shah’s family members abandon Anupamaa and she feels alone. Meanwhile, Anupamaa decides to bring Raghav into the Shah house and gives him a new job. Rahi gets angry seeing Anupamaa and Raghav’s closeness. Anupamaa and Raghav start working together in Anu Ki Rasoi. Rahi loses her calm seeing them together. She sees a possibility of Raghav becoming Anupamaa’s partner. Raghav stands by Anupamaa and supports her emotionally. Rahi feels that Raghav and Anupamaa are all set to get into a relationship. She feels that Raghav will replace Anuj. She is not ready to accept Raghav taking Anuj’s place in Anupamaa’s life.

On the other hand, Aryan and Mahi fall for each other. Khyati spots them together at a clothing store. She tells them to leave before Parag notices them. Khyati tells Aryan to not hide his love for Mahi and takes responsibility for talking to Parag about the same. Aryan thinks about Mahi and starts blushing. He plans to confess his feelings for her and plans a proposal. Mahi wants to get close to Prem and uses Aryan. What will happen next? Will Rahi get away from Anupamaa? Will Aryan get to know about Mahi’s true intentions?

What to Catch at the  WAVES Summit 2025 in Mumbai


WAVES 2025, the inaugural World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit, is taking place in Mumbai from May 1 to 4 at the Jio World Convention Centre. Organised by the Government of India, the summit is being pitched as a major moment for India’s creative industries—bringing together filmmakers, musicians, tech innovators, producers, and policymakers from around the world.

Here are some of the most anticipated sessions and experiences from the four-day summit.

An opening session that brings together legends on one stage

One of the most anticipated moments of the summit is the session titled Legends and Legacies: The Stories That Shaped India’s Soul. It brings together six of Indian cinema’s most enduring stars—Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Mohanlal, Mithun Chakraborty, Chiranjeevi, and Hema Malini. The conversation, moderated by Akshay Kumar, will reflect on their individual journeys, the evolution of cinema over the decades, and the stories that continue to resonate across generations.

A rare one-on-one with Shah Rukh Khan

In a more personal session, actor Shah Rukh Khan sits down with director and producer Karan Johar. The two will discuss Khan’s early years, his rise in the film industry, and what it has meant to forge a path without industry connections. Titled The Journey: From Outsider to Ruler, the session is expected to offer a candid look at the actor’s legacy, along with insights into the evolving nature of stardom in India.

A panel that explores Indian cinema’s global momentum

Director SS Rajamouli, known internationally for RRR, joins actors Anil Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, and composer A.R. Rahman for a conversation about how Indian storytelling is expanding across borders. Moderated by Karan Johar, the session titled The New Mainstream will explore what it takes for Indian content to succeed globally, and how actors, musicians and filmmakers are building cross-cultural connections.

Technology and the future of OTT content

In a special panel discussion in association with Rolling Stone India, thought leaders from across the spheres of content, technology, and policy will come together for a session themed around OTT & Digital-Driven Democratization. Curated as a thematic exploration across three key sessions, the discussions aim to drive actionable collaborations and offer new perspectives on India’s evolving digital entertainment ecosystem.

The event will kick off with a session on Scaling Indian Media for Global Markets, moderated by Sajan Raj Kurup, Founder of Creativeland Asia and Creativeland Studios, alongside keynote speaker David Unger, CEO of Artists International Group (AIG). Panellists include author Amish Tripathi, actress Kriti Kharbanda, Mahima Kaul, Director of Public Policy at Netflix India, Soumya Mukherjee, COO of Hoichoi, and Aditi Shrivastava, CEO of Pocket Aces.

This will be followed by a session on Public–Private Collaboration for Developing Indian OTT and Hyperlocal Content, featuring Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO of Prasar Bharati, as keynote speaker, and a discussion moderated by Avinash Pandey, former CEO of ABP News Network. Panellists will include Richard Nicolas, COO and CFO of Ridley Scott Creative Group, actress Rituparna Sengupta, actor, producer and singer Sachin Pilgaonkar, and William Pfeiffer, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Globalgate Entertainment. The final session will focus on Emerging Technologies and AVGC in Optimising the OTT Landscape, with a keynote address by Nicolas Granatino, Chairman of Novaquark, and a discussion moderated by Rolling Stone India’s Executive Editor, Shamani Joshi. Panellists will include Roland Landers, CEO of AIGF; Syed Raza, GM of Content at Vodafone; Vaibhav Modi, Founder of Victor Tango Entertainment; actress Isha Talwar; and more.

The event will culminate in the release of a special report on the OTT ecosystem, jointly published by Rolling Stone India, Amazon Web Services, and Primus Partners.

Global voices join the conversation

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos will be among the international speakers at the summit, sharing his perspective on India’s role in the platform’s global growth. His session is expected to highlight what the international market is looking for in Indian content and how platforms are evolving their strategies to serve multilingual, multicultural audiences. Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, will also shed light on the trends and virality shaping Gen Z content in a conversation with actress Shraddha Kapoor. 

A dedicated showcase of India’s creative diversity

The Bharat Pavilion at WAVES, themed “Kala to Code,” will spotlight the intersection of culture and technology across India’s states. From traditional storytelling and crafts to innovations in animation, gaming, and digital arts, the pavilion will present how different regions are adapting their cultural identity to contemporary formats.

A landmark concert by A.R. Rahman

As part of the summit’s cultural programming, composer and musician A.R. Rahman will present The Wonderment Tour at DY Patil Stadium on May 3. Presented as one of the headline cultural events of WAVES 2025, this marks Rahman’s first stadium concert in Mumbai in eight years. Touted as a show that merges tradition and innovation, this concert is designed as an immersive tribute to his 32-year journey in global music. The performance will feature Rahman’s most iconic songs across languages and eras, with appearances by artists such as Sukhwinder Singh, Jonita Gandhi, Neeti Mohan, The Yellow Diary, Anubha Bajaj, and Riday. The show is choreographed by Shiamak Davar and will blend music, movement and visual storytelling into a large-scale celebration of Rahman’s legacy.

A spotlight on emerging electronic music

WAVES will also feature Resonate: The EDM Challenge, a platform created for upcoming electronic music producers and DJs to perform and gain visibility. With India’s electronic music scene growing steadily, the showcase aims to support emerging talent while expanding the summit’s musical scope beyond film and playback.
