IPL 2025 | KKR facing same failures as seen throughout this IPL, says Eoin Morgan

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled with batting issues throughout this IPL season and the changes made for the home game against Gujarat Titans were not effective, feels former captain Eoin Morgan.

KKR’s loss to Gujarat Titans by 39 runs here on Monday (April 21, 2025) was their second consecutive defeat in the tournament, third in the last five matches and overall fifth in eight games.

It has also been a season of struggle at home for the three-time champions who have also lost three of the four matches at the Eden Gardens.

“Kolkata Knight Riders has simply not bounced back as well as we would have liked them to. It’s always a good sign for a strong team with a lot of character around, but they had the same failures that they’ve shown throughout the tournament,” said JioStar expert Morgan.

“They made a couple of changes (against GT), mainly to try and gain some impetus in their batting line-up, and it didn’t necessarily come off. Were the changes worth it? They’ll sit back and say no.” Morgan said KKR failed to forge partnerships in chase of 199 as they finished at an ordinary 159 for eight.

“It was interesting to hear Ajinkya Rahane talk about 199 being a chaseable score because towards the back end of Gujarat Titans’ innings, we thought the ball held up more than we expected (and) that made finding boundaries harder,” he said.

Morgan added, “But there was no rhythm, no substantial partnerships — almost the polar opposite of what Gujarat Titans displayed.” Morgan was all praise for India and GT pacer Prasidh Krishna who delivered another vital spell of 4-0-25-2.

“He’s the purple cap holder at the moment, and his rhythm just keeps getting better. We know he has that extra bit of pace to work with, but you have to admire the strength he brings during the middle phase of the game,” he said.

“As a captain, having a seamer who can make that kind of impact in the middle overs is absolutely priceless.” “He now finds himself with the most wickets in this year’s tournament — by some margin, actually, by four. It’s great to see him growing as a player, evolving across formats, and now being rewarded with national honours as well,” Morgan added.

Meanwhile, former India batter Ambati Rayudu praised B Sai Sudharsan, who made 36-ball 52 to take his tally past 400-run mark in this IPL, for playing the game in “traditional style”.

Rayudu said, “It gives us such joy to watch him bat. As a classical batsman, he shows how the game can still be played in a traditional style — (to) use the pace of the ball, play under your eyes, keep it along the ground, and play smart cricket. Playing smart cricket brings runs and also builds confidence.”

New Delhi: Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has joined the growing chorus of voices from the sporting world expressing sorrow and outrage over the barbaric terrorist attack that occurred on April 22 in the Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack, which claimed the lives of at least 28 people and injured over 20 others, has been described as one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
Taking to Instagram, Siraj penned a powerful and emotional message condemning the brutality:
“Just read about the horrific and shocking terrorist attack in Pahalgam. To target and kill innocent civilians in the name of religion is pure evil…
“No cause, no belief, no ideology can ever justify such a monstrous act. Yeh kaisi ladai hai… jahaan insaan ki jaan ki koi keemat hi nahi…
“I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and trauma the families must be going through.
“May the families find the strength to survive this unbearable grief. We are so sorry for your loss.
Who’s that IPL player?
“I hope this madness ends soon and these terrorists are found and punished, without mercy.”
Siraj’s words resonated with many fans and fellow players, who echoed his sentiments in the comments, lauding the cricketer for speaking up against such senseless violence.

The attack has sparked a major security response in the region. The Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and central agencies have launched an intensive manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Meanwhile, national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have vowed that those responsible will be brought to justice.
As the nation mourns yet another tragedy, Siraj’s message stands as a reminder that in times of darkness, voices of compassion, unity, and courage must ring louder than ever.

The players of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians will wear black armbands during their IPL match which will not feature cheerleaders and fireworks here on Wednesday (April 23, 2025) to mourn the victims of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that caused 26 deaths.

The teams will also observe a minute’s silence to pay their respects to those affected by the incident that has drawn international condemnation.

“The players of two teams will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence in memory of all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam,” a BCCI source told PTI.

“As a mark of respect there would be no cheerleaders on the sidelines of MI vs SRH game. No crackers will be burst,” he added.

Terrorists opened fire on civilians at the popular tourist location in south Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least 26 persons and injuring several others.

The Resistance Front (TRF), which is a part of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack has drawn strong condemnation from across the world.

The Indian cricket team snapped bilateral cricket with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and recently refused to tour the country for the Champions Trophy, prompting the ICC to make provisions for a neutral venue in Dubai.

Like any other cricketer from the country, young Delhi Capitals opener Abishek Porel aspires to represent India in the future but said his current focus is to help his side win its maiden Indian Premier League trophy this year.

Chasing 160, the 22-year-old made 51 off 36 balls to help DC win by eight wickets against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).

“Obviously, I am enjoying every innings, trying to develop in every innings. The future plan is to play for India, play for the country for a long period,” Porel said at the post-match press conference.

“But current focus is the IPL trophy, how can I help the team in winning the trophy, how can I contribute for DC. This matters a lot right now.

“I know my game and the support staff also knows that. The support staff always tells me to play freely and not to take any tension.”

DC bowlers come good

Asked to bat, LSG made a quick start with Aiden Markram (52) and Mitchell Marsh (45) sharing 87 runs for the opening stand in 10 overs.

But DC bowlers made a brilliant comeback with Mukesh Kumar (4/33) leading from the front to restrict LSG to 159 for 6, a target which Porel feels was gettable.

“The wicket was very good, so 160 score was a bit less, so we had that in mind that we need to chase these runs. Good toss to win. There was not much difference but the skipper took a good decision,” Porel said.

“They (LSG) got runs initially but we knew we can restrict them in middle overs. We had good spinners so we backed ourselves and made a comeback with some good bowling in the second half.”

LSG assistant coach Vijay Dahiya said the hosts lost the momentum in the second half of their innings after a bright start.

“I think leaving pitch, you can see that we scored over 80 runs in nine overs. From there we lost the momentum a bit. We had the momentum and we should have taken advantage of that,” he said.

“Let’s give credit where its due. I think Delhi Capitals’ bowlers assessed the conditions better. They made a very good comeback.”
