Ranchi: Blooming winter roses offered Ranchi residents a gentle pause from daily routines as they thronged the annual show hosted by the Rose Society of Ranchi at Ranchi Club’s multipurpose hall. Rose lovers lingered at the hall and strolled among displays, while seasoned gardeners exchanged tips on pruning, soil and winter care.Many visitors said the roses brought calm amid the city’s hustle and bustle. “We come here every year. The colours and fragrance instantly lift your mood,” said Anil Kumar, a visitor.College student Riya Singh said the show inspired her to start a small terrace garden. “I didn’t know so many varieties could grow in Ranchi’s climate,” she said.Children visiting the show were seen excitedly naming colours and posing for photographs beside blooms such as Papa Meilland, John F Kennedy and the multicoloured double delight. Senior citizens, meanwhile, recalled how rose gardening was once a popular household hobby. “Earlier, every home had at least a few rose plants. Shows like this revive that culture,” said retired govt officer Suresh Prasad.Around 300 flower entries and 50 craft, painting and arrangement entries were showcased this year, reflecting a steady interest among individual rose growers and institutions. The best bloom of the show, Elina, drew particular attention for its form and colour, while several Indian rose varieties highlighted local cultivation skills.A member of the Rose Society of Ranchi, Hazel Davis, said the aim was not competition alone. “We want people to reconnect with nature and encourage home gardening, especially among the younger generation,” she said.
