Grave crimes in Thoothukudi town subdivision drop by 51.67% in 2025


The number of grave crimes reported in Thoothukudi town subdivision has declined by 51.67% in 2025 compared to 2024.

According to police sources, 21 murder cases were registered in Thoothukudi town sub division in 2024, while the figure dropped to 15 in 2025. Notably, no cases of dacoity, day-time house breaking and snatching cases were reported in 2025.

The sources also noted that increased patrol during night and festival periods contributed significantly to maintenance of law and order.

Robbery cases saw a sharp decline, falling to eight in 2025 from 31 in 2024. The number of convictions also increased in 2025 to 14, up from the nine in 2024 under the Thoothukudi town police jurisdiction.

“Intensive monitoring and surveillance have played a pivotal role in reducing crimes in Thoothukudi town sub division. Later in 2025, 686 surveillance cameras were installed in three phases across major roads, residential areas of Thoothukudi town police subdivision, which could be monitored from integrated control rooms. This also prevented an increase in the number of grave crimes reported in Thoothukudi police sub division,” the sources added.

Superintendent of Police, Thoothukudi district, N. Silambarasan told The Hindu that intensive surveillance and monitoring would be carried out across the district, in accordance with the provision of crime prevention laws. Continuous monitoring of repeat offenders and crime-prone areas would be undertaken along with measures to further bring down the crime rate.
