“Worst Kind of Discrimination in PoJK”: UKPNP Chairman Flags Deepening Crisis

For years, Pakistan has claimed that Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) and Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB) enjoy self-governance. Yet, residents and activists from the region paint a starkly different reality. Political institutions operate under strict oversight from Islamabad, leaving elected bodies powerless. Surveillance, coercion, and military control dominate daily life, while legal and constitutional rights remain limited, preventing citizens from challenging state actions. Activists argue that Pakistan deliberately undermines local governance to maintain complete authority. The gap between Pakistan’s official narrative and the lived experiences of people in PoJK and PoGB continues to widen, raising pressing questions about democracy, rights, and accountability in these regions and drawing international concern.
